Who pays for Hospice Care?
No one is refused hospice care due to inability to pay. Good Shepherd Hospice has historically provided millions of dollars in unreimbursed care each year. Hospice accepts Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance, and has a sliding fee scale for those who are admitted with no insurance or government assistance.
Although Good Shepherd Hospice criteria are for patients with a prognosis of one year or less, most insurance companies - and government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid - pay for services in the last six months of life. Treatment prior to the last six months may not be covered under insurance. Therefore, Good Shepherd Hospice will work with patients and families to develop a payment plan (if applicable) based on the patient's ability to pay. No patient or family will be denied services due to a lack of financial resources.
When it does become appropriate for Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance benefits to begin, Good Shepherd Hospice will work with the family to complete the proper paperwork. Specific insurance coverage for services, in addition to the core services provided, will be explained by Good Shepherd Hospice staff.
